More then 1.5 million acres of protected land makes up 24 Italian National Parks. This is equal to five percent of the nations terrain. Abruzzo, another region of Italy, has several national parks. In Majella-Morrone National Park there are wolves, the Marsican brown bear, red deer, roe deer, and 130 different kinds of birds including the rare Peregrine falcon, Golden eagle, goshawk, eagle-owl and a dotterel that nests only in this mountain in Italy.
In recent years deer have also become a large problem in Italy and their numbers have increased despite regular hunting. The summer's drought can force them to eat the only green to be found in the countryside. Due to the increase in population, car accidents have become common because of the deer trying to cross with on coming traffic.
